Scottish Cup First Leg Preview

Posted 15/09/04

With both clubs having disappointing league campaigns this year, this Friday sees the first leg of the Scottish Cup at Armadale.

There is probably little need for a preview on this one, as supporters of both clubs tend to know each other inside out.

Edinburgh have got the better of the meetings between the two clubs this season even seeing fit to boast 'Spring Trophy Winners' on one site. I doubt if I'll put 'Scottish Cup Winners' in my heading if Glasgow win over the two legs! They also came out on top where the league meetings were concerned by quite a considerable margin after a very poor showing by Glasgow at Armadale.

Hopefully the Tigers team will be out for revenge but a far better showing than the last visit to Armadale is a must.

There are only a few changes from the teams that rode in August, all bar one being positional. James Grieves is unfit and will be replaced by Ross Brady - the Scottish Cup is exempt from the normal guest rules and by agreement the clubs try to ensure that there are 7 riders on each side. The only other change in the Glasgow side is Eric Carrillo moving into the main body of the team and David McAllan dropping to reserve.

For Edinburgh, Peter Carr will probably ride at number 3 teaming up with Wethers at 4 meaning Pijper will be at 2 and Schlein at 5.

With Edinburgh on a high after a very comfortable win last week without the influential Rory Schlein, it may well be that keeping it close will be Glasgow's priority. A lot will probably depend on the middle order on the night.

At heat leader level, despite George's recent form, Edinburgh will probably hold the advantage whilst at reserve the honours could work out about even.

As with all sports, Derby meetings are something different though, form tends to go out the window. One thing that tends not to change is the atmosphere. Lets hope it is rewarded with a good nights speedway.
