Woe at Workington

v Workington, Posted 10/07/04

Embarrassing. No other words for it. A jaded uninterested Glasgow team were humped by a hungrier Workington side who coasted to their biggest win of the season and possibly their easiest.

Things didn't start too badly with a shared heat one from the gate. 'From the gate' was to become the phrase of the night sadly. Woodifield and Wright easily despatched Blackman and Carrillo in heat 2. Heat 3 was called back after a superb start from Graham Jones, Nieminen and Harrison gated in the re-run and it was all over. By comparison, Stead jumped the start by a mile in the fourth heat but it was allowed to go. Parker managed to outgate Woodifield and take second place.

Stancl was out as a TR in heat 5 and led until the end of the second lap when Harrison managed one of the few passes of the night round the outside.

Heats 6 and 7 provided 4-2's for the Comets with Jones retiring with engine failure at the back in heat 7. Another from the gate 5-1 followed in heat 8. Those who were still awake saw Glasgow put Parker out as a TR in heat 9. Shane had a good tussle with Rusty Harrison at the front for two laps before his bike gave up the ghost and the Comets recorded yet another 5-1.

Heat 10 saw Jones retire again with a puncture this time although Bentley's second place restricted the Comets to a 4-2, something they rectified with a 5-1 in heat 11.

Glasgow threw Bentley in as a Golden Double Tactical Substitute in heat 12 but in all honesty on a track which had provided virtually no passing all night it was no surprise to see the Comets coast home yet again.

Totally destroyed, Glasgow conceded 5-1's to Workington in the remaining three heats for a comprehensive thumping.

Not only did Glasgow fail to win a heat all night, Workington's reserves were beating Glasgow heat leaders and after the first heat no Workington rider finished in last place.

Not one for the purists and definately one Glasgow will want to forget. Major changes have to be made in the attitude of the Glasgow team and it better be made clear to them that this type of performance is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.
