Tigers Swat Wasps
v Newport, Posted 15/07/04
This was expected to be a one sided meeting
and in many ways it was. The big disappointment must be that a couple
of home riders did not capitalise on the opportunity to increase their
points tally and confidence against poor opposition.
Right from the start Newport were in trouble when Ondrasik
skittled his partner Wilkinson and was excluded. The re-run saw the
Tigers take an easy 5-1 from the gate. Unfortunately in heat 2 Blackman
was not so sharp and allowed Wilkinson through at the end of the second
lap, Glasgow getting a 4-2. this was to be reversed however in heat
3 when against all expectations Lund came out and beat Grieves comfortably
with Dicken trailing in a poor last.
A good battle followed in heat 4 between Parker, Watson
and Carrillo with the wasp splitting the two Tigers. The next three
heats were to be won by Glasgow and Carrillo in heat 6 pushed Watson
all the way but the Newport man held on for second. Parker in heat 8
appeared to leave himself a lot to do after an awful gate but went from
last to first in the first two bends.
Newports first tactical ride appeared in the form of
Korneliussen in heat 8 but a good gate and ride from Carrillo saw him
kept in third whilst Stancl raced home for the victory.
Second tactical ride of the night was unsurprisingly
Watson in heat 9. Given his form on the night it was no surprise when
he made it count and won the heat with ease.
Heat 10 saw Stancl and Carrillo acheive their second
5-1 of the evening and again it was the young American who did all the
work, superbly blocking both Newport riders at the end of the first
lap.
It was getting predictable and no surprise when Parker
won heat 11 with Blackman last. Lund however gated in heat 12 to ensure
a share of the points in that one.
No doubt the Glasgow top pair were unhappy to loose
heat 13 to Watson but he was so fast out of the gate he was not going
to be caught and the spoils were shared.
Reserve replacement Carrillo just failed to beat the
two minute exclusion after a clutch problem leaving Grieves to win the
race on his own to share the heat.
After a false start, Watson was to gate behind Stancl
in heat 15 but passed him on the first lap to attain second place behind
Parker.
The victory was a comfortable one, the points margin
disappointing as was the performance of Lee Dicken and Corey Blackman.
Newport, apart from Watson are a very poor team and it is no surprise
that a number of others are scoring heavily against them.
I would be very disappointed if Glasgow didn't only
take the bonus in Wales but also the two points if this meeting is anything
to go by..
