The first rider to reject Glasgow's contract
offer for 2006 was confirmed this morning when, as expected, George
Stancl was announced as Newcastle Diamonds first signing for next
season.
Although it may have come as a surprise to some fans it cannot
have come as that much of a surprise for the promotion as they would
have had to have given Newcastle permission to talk to Stancl who
is still a Glasgow asset.
George has been at Ashfield since 2003 and has been a popular
rider for Glasgow even with his higher than normal percentage of engine
failures - particularly towards the end of 2004. He increased his
average by 0.16 last season and Newcastle will no doubt feel they
have got a coup with George's signing on 8.14 without bonus points.
Whilst it is disappointing to loose George, he has made no
secret of his intentions to move on and perhaps now is the right time
for both parties. His will not be an easy race jacket to fill however.
