BSPA Conference - Initial Comments
Posted 24/11/05

The initial report has been issued from the BSPA Conference and is posted on the BSPA website - amongst others.

Although it is too early for individual clubs to comment on the outcome and there will undoubtedly be other information to come out, the main points from Glasgow's perspective would appear to be as follows: -

  • For the top 5 riders, the points limit is 33 excluding bonus (see note 1 below)
  • The remaining 2 riders must be British reserves and they will be graded (see note 2 below)
  • The Young Shield will be replaced by Elite League style play offs for the Premier League Championship. Kings Lynn would have been crowned 2005 PL Champions if this had come into effect a season earlier
  • As expected, Mildenhall step up to the Premier League
  • The allocation of the Pairs, Fours and PLRC are exactly the same as last season meaning that Glasgow will play host again to the Pairs. Hopefully that can be taken as a positive sign in the fight for someplace for the Tigers to race next season. It also means the PLRC is yet again at Sheffield with the fours at Workington
  • The Premier Trophy and Knock Out Cup will run as previously
  • The tactical substitute and tactical ride rules remain

Obviously we will not find out if this is as was agreed last week at the 'pre' AGM meeting although you would expect that little should change in a week.

The Press Release has certainly instigated a lot of discussion amongst fans and no doubt this will probably continue until the start of the season when we will be able to see for ourselves if the outcome is favourable or not.

NOTE 1; -

Much discussion has already taken place amongst fans on the net about the new points limit. It is interesting to note that last season only two clubs technically would not have had to loose riders from their 2004 team to go into 2005.

Under these new rules, using the figures minus bonus quoted on Premier League Speedway, again only two clubs could technically use the same top 5 riders to start 2006 as ended 2005. Six reserve slots at the end of the season were filled by foreign riders, although interestingly not in the teams who could retain their top five.

NOTE 2; - Mention has been made of 'grading' for reserve riders but little clarification is given as to what these grading's will be and how they will be worked out. It is thought they will be based on a riders age and experience and that there will be 3 grading's numbered 1 (least experienced etc) to 3. Teams would then be able to pick their two riders up to a total of 4 points.
