Shane
Performs Well at Grasstrack Testimonial
by Gordon Gilbey, Posted 07/10/05
Glasgow's captain was back aboard a grasstrack/longtrack
bike tonight at The Oak Tree Arena in Somerset as he made his second
appearance of the week in a testimonial meeting.
Tonight it was a 'meeting with a difference' for Barry Woodruff,
a well known grasstrack rider who has been riding for 25 years. Baz
has also spannered for Rebels favourite Glenn Cunningham.
All the rider were riding grasstrack/longtrack machine which differ
from normal speedway machines in that they have rear suspension and
gears. The bikes were however fitted with the smaller 19" speedway
wheels.
Shane scored a creditable 11 points and just missed out on qualifying
for the final. The line up featured a mixture of riders from both
the shale and grass with Belle Vue's Joe Screen winning his 5 heat
rides and then the final. The fastest time of 58.49 was recorded in
heat 12 by home favourite Cunningham but as this was slower than many
races on normal speedway machines the debate as to which type of machine
would be quicker remains unaswered.
