Win Fastest Gater Contest
by
Cee Bee 25/07/05
Glasgow suffered another hefty defeat at
the County Ground in a meeting that can be summed up with one phrase
- from the gate.
Rather than write a heat by heat analysis, just look
at the scorecard, the finishing order was the order in which they
gated with only a couple of exceptions. There was only one pass all
evening - ironically by a Glasgow rider - and as a neutral attending
a meeting on holiday I was bored and disappointed.
The track was pretty much the standard Exeter circuit
and was fast, but the inside gates were poor with only Seemond Stephens
winning a race from one of the inside traps.
Heat two saw James Cockle slide off on the second
lap and Trent Leverington looked to have picked up a puncture in heat
8 causing his withdrawl. Surprisingly, Shane Parker had two engine
failures, the first on the line in heat 9 in a race Glasgow would
have been expecting him to win comfortably, the second when he merely
pulled off onto the centre green in heat 13 although the bike did
still seem to have power.
The only pass of the night was when George Stancl
came in as a GDTS in heat 12 against the inexperienced Sam Hurst and
got past him for third place. On a track that was not set up for passing
it was the only time Glasgow could realistically try going off 15m
and at a stage that every point was a prisoner.
Glasgow were a well beaten side with only Stancl
looking a danger. Ekberg was definitely on the pace but unfortunately
couldn't get out of the gate. The biggest disappointment was Shane
Parker but having watched Glasgows results this season I must have
been unlucky in catching what will probably be his worst performance
of the season.
Losing the bonus point can only have added insult
to injury especially as Exeter were, with no disrespect intended towards
Sam Hurst, a 5 man team.
