What A Farce

Whatever the reason, speedway was very much the loser at Craven Park as the meeting between Hull and Glasgow ended after only 3 heats.

In reality, the meeting should never have happened, people should not have been admitted to the stadium and the riders should never have been allowed to go out on track on the grounds of safety.

The problems at Hull with the Vikings and their tennants Hull Kingston Rovers Rugby Club, have been well documented and it is Hulls last season at Craven Park. Rumours of non payment if rent amongst other things have been going around for some time but to the normal speedway fan they just went along last night to watch speedway.

However, essential electrical equipment to operate all the track electronics had been removed and sold to Scunthorpe Speedway by HKR, meaning amongst other things no start gates, no exclusion lights and no red lights. Whilst a meeting can be run without according to the rule book, safety is surely compromised as was illustrated by heat 2 last night when James Cockle fell and it took far too long for the riders to be made aware.

Three heats - and five starts - did take place, none of the starts being fair. Eventually the inevitable announcement came at 8.30 that the meeting could not continue.

The debate will continue for some time as to who was to blame for this debacle, but more importantly speedway as a whole has again been made to look an amateur ill-run sport.

The scorecard and heat details for the three heats run can be found here.
