Workington Away Preview
Posted 07/04/06

The Tigers make the short trip down to Derwent Park on Saturday for the first of this weekend's two meetings against Workington. Obviously it is a meeting Kauko will be looking forward to and Tigers will be hoping that he can put his knowledge of the Workington track to good use.

Workington have only had three meetings as well this season - one of them only running for 12 heats. They beat Sheffield at home before loosing narrowly at Newcastle before beating Edinburgh over 12 heats at Derwent.

As most expected, the main danger in these meetings has been James Wright, so much so he is the Comets top scorer so far this season. Whilst Garry Stead has also started well and shown a slight increase in his average, the other heat leader Paul Thorp is having a much poorer time of it and has struggled to find form.

Pole Tomasz Piszcz has also looked impressive in the early meetings especially at home, with Ritchie Hawkins as the other rider in the middle order also riding far above his initial average. In Aiden Collins, Workington have the rider many expect to be the top reserve in the PL this year and although as such they had to pair him up with a Grade C, Lee Derbyshire has shown some promise.

From Glasgow's point of view, it is as well not to look at Danny's scores the last time he was at Workington although it was back in 2004. A pairing of Bird and Parker will expect to outscore Stead and Thorp. Middle order is once again the area Glasgow will struggle especially as it is probably Workington's strength. Glasgow will be depending on Kauko to minimise the damage in this area. Robert Ksiezak has only ridden Derwent competitively once previously, scoring 4+1 although the only opposition rider he actually beat was Tony Dart. Both he and James Cockle should have the beating of Lee Derbyshire but will have to be at their best if they want to have any chance of getting the better of Aiden Collins at home.

Realistically, Tigers will be hoping to hold the scores close to give a chance of claiming the bonus on Sunday at home.

Directions to Workington and details of pricing can be found here. There are roadwork's on the M74 between Hamilton services and J5 Bothwell, no other roadwork's are known about.
