Law
Gets Voted In

The
following article, by Jeff Holmes, appeared in The Sun on
Wednesday 6th December.
Steve Lawson never lifted a major trophy
during his 14 YEARS with Glasgow Tigers - but now he'll get
a gong after being voted the club's greatest rider.
And the Cumbrian racer admits he thought
he was cursed because 12 months after he left the team they
won a league and cup double!
Lawson will collect his prize at a bash in
Firhill's Aitken Suite this Friday - his first visit to the
city since his last race in 1992.
He beamed: "I can't believe supporters
have remembered me. To be honoured in such a way is amazing
- I'm incredibly flattered.
The whole thing took me back to the early
90's when my time was drawing to a close and there wasn't
a medal in the cabinet."
Incredible
"But a year later Glasgow bagged the
double - then repeated the feat the following season.
It was incredible but I was happy for our
fans because they had been great - and even supported us when
we rode at Workington.
It was just up the road from me but they
had a round trip of 250 miles for HOME meetings and, believe
me, the A74 was a nightmare in 1987!"
Lawson skippered the Tigers for the bulk
of his time at the club and raced in over 500 matches - remaining
Glasgow's top points scorer to this day.
But despite signing in 1978, he didn't race
in the City until the club moved to Shawfield 10 years later.
He explained; "After leaving Hampden
in '72, the Tigers became nomads and went to Coatbridge, Blantyre
and then Workington.
We were usually fighting closure and never
came that close to being a top team. But I was happy at the
club and had no reason to leave.
Now I'm looking forward to Friday's 60th
anniversary party. There wont be a dry eye in the house!"
