Junior
Event Abandoned
Posted 15/10/06
The
combined Heathersfield Gold Helmet and Scottish Junior Championship
Meeting was abandoned this evening after an horrendous looking
crash which left around 12 feet of the safety fence completely
destroyed. The most important thing however was that the safety
fence did its job and both riders involved were remarkably
able to walk back to the pits.
The
accident happened on the first lap of the second heat, the
opening heat having been won by Gary Beaton from the gate
by a considerable margin. Cal McDade and Gary Flint were ahead
coming out of the second bend followed by Ricky Lee Beecroft
with Johnny Gray close behind. Coming out of the second bend
Johnny's front wheel appeared to lock with the rear of Ricky
Lee's bike and both riders went hurtling into the safety fence
on the back straight at speed.
Initially
both were quickly on their feet and checking the other was
okay in a manner that would put many more experienced riders
to shame. They were checked over on track by medical staff
and first Ricky Lee and then Johnny walked back to the pits
but the damage to the fence was far too severe to be repairable
and the meeting was abandoned.
Glasgow
may look at running this event next Sunday at the Ashfield
Classic but the logistics of that have still to be explored.
