Paul is a fully qualified sports coach and as well as speedway
also excellent in swimming in the mid-80's.
Throughout his speedway career he has managed to stay mostly
with northern clubs, starting out at Newcastle in 87 before
moving to Middlesborough for the next four years. Between
92 and 96 he rode in the top league with Coventry and Bradford
before returning North having another spell with Middlesborough
as well as Hull Glasgow and Berwick.
Paul has gone on record as saying he feels it important
to bring more entertainment into speedway and the volatile
Geordie certainly does his best to do that! He can sometimes
be a bit too hot-headed but when focused is an asset to
any team and younger riders can learn a lot from him when
it comes to preparation and maintenance of machinery.
A welcome addition to the Glasgow team in 2004, he easily
won the away rider of the year award and was a popular choice
to return to the Stripes in 2005. However things did not
worked out as hoped for Paul and after bad start to the
season that saw his average drop by over two points, he
elected to retire after 12 meetings.
