Gary is obviously well known to Glasgow fans, coming from the infamous Beaton family. A familiar face around Ashfield, Gary has so far failed to make the break from Conference League level to Premier League since taking up speedway in 2000 although he was named as Glasgow's Official no.8 in 2004.

With the demise of the Dale Devils, he was left to travel to Buxton as a part of their squad for 2006 to get some racing but only competed in half a dozen meetings for them and ended up with a CL average of 5.74.

He won the Scottish Junior Championship in 2003 but this was followed by third places in both 2004 and 2005 on his home track. He will feel very unlucky not to have regained the title in 2006 thanks to an exclusion in the final of the Heathersfield Open after finishing the round stages as top scorer with a perfect 12.
