Glasgow fans got a chance last season to see that Steve Jones did
in fact exist as he rode in the Heathersfield Golden Helmet Championship
at the end of October 2006. Despite having been unable to obtain regular
CL racing during 2006, he rode well and showed a tidy style, finally
finishing runner up to Matej Kus, although partly due to Cal McDade's
engine failure in the final.
In his interview at the end of the meeting, a delighted Steve said
that he would be trying very hard to secure a berth in the Conference
League in 2007 although location as much as anything seem to have
made him a forgotten man.
Steve first came to attention at Lathallan in 1997 but in the few
seasons he has raced he has been mostly a conference league rider,
turning out for Lathallan, Linlithgow and Newcastle Gems.
He actually made his debut for Edinburgh against Glasgow in the knockout
cup in 1998. That season saw him make 6 appearances for Edinburgh
and 4 for Newcastle Diamonds and these to date are his only appearances
out with the conference league.
At the end of 2004, he was turning out at number 5 for Carmarthen
in the Conference League
