The return of 'The Messiah' for 2007 was a priority
as far as most Tigers were concerned. His popularity amongst Tigers
fans and their appreciation of him was highlighted in the 'Greatest
Ever Tiger Poll' for the 60th anniversary celebrations which saw Shane
finish as runner up to Steve Lawson.
Not only an entertainer on - and off - track, Shane
did a phenomenal amount of promotional work for Glasgow Speedway last
year, trying to raise the Tigers profile. Once again he was also an
influential captain, helping his team mates out when asked and always
happy to voice an opinion when needed.
He has now also become well known for resurrecting and
establishing the SRA with help from his wife and it speaks volumes
that he was invited along to the final day of the 2006 BSPA conference
- albeit after all decisions were probably made - to put forward concerns
from the riders point of view.
Having won his second pairs title in a row with Danny
Bird last season, Shane will no doubt be trying this season for three
in a row with his partner from 2005, George Stancl, although it almost
certainly will not be at Ashfield. Shane has been very vocal on the
need for such events to be held on neutral tracks but that also seems
unlikely.
There is always a worry at the end of every year that
Shane may decide to call it a day - he did initially intend to retire
after 2004 after all - but thankfully speedway, and in particular
Glasgow Speedway, will once again benefit from his enthusiasm and
entertainment in 2007.
