Mixed Fortunes at Berwick
(Posted 04/10/08)

Lee Dicken scored consistently for the home side this evening as they edged past Birmingham in the Young Shield qualifier whilst Anders Andersen had a tough introduction to the Shielfield circuit.

The opening heat saw Anders and Lee face each other with Anders taking the rider replacement ride. Unfortunately for Anders bike problems continue to plague him and he ended up going off 15m after failing to make the two minutes, a handicap he was unable to make up. Lee made a decent gate but was rounded by Piszcz on the opening bends and that was it as far as the race was concerned.

Both Glasgow riders faced each other again in heat 3 with Lee Dicken taking a rider replacement ride. Anders and Lee were fighting out the minor placing's off the start, Anders getting the drop on Lee from the tapes. Lee however came under Anders on the third bend as the youngster made an error that he could not recover from and ended up sliding off.

Heat 6 saw Lee involved in a battle at the back with Birmingham's Jay Herne. Lee gated but was passed by Herne on the back straight of the opening lap. He hit back by bend three and set his sights on Craig Watson in second place. Wato however managed to hold Lee off although as always Lee never gave up and made him work all the way to the line for it.

Anders was out in heat 7 but after a poor gate ended up failing to score although he did make up significant ground on Franchetti in third place.

Heat 8 saw Lee Dicken claim another third place, this time from the gate before repeating the feat in heat 10, once again beating Glasgow team mate Anders who finished at the rear in a well spread out heat.

That was to be Lee's last race of the night but Anders was out again in heat 14 where the visitors succumbed to a 5-1 to home track specialists Paul Clews and Scott Smith, Anders getting the point for third place.

The final totals saw Anders score 1 from 5 with Lee getting 5+3 from his 5 rides.
