Gutsy Performance from Lee at Berwick
(Posted 29/10/08)
Things didn't quite go as Lee would have hoped as he made a guest appearance for Berwick in the Young Shield Final last night, three of his rides unfortunately seeing him hitting the deck.
On a very cold evening, Lee started well enough, gating on a 5-1 with partner Tai Woffinden in the opening heat but Jason Lyons - guesting for Workington - got the better of him on the second bend. The action in the race was all between Lee and Jason, Lee making him work hard all the way and trying a few different lines to get past but to no avail.
Heat 3 saw Lee up against Carl Stonehewer with whom he had a difference of opinion in the first leg. Stonehewer got the better gate and Lee was playing catch up for the whole race. He did get close to Stonehewer and looked as if he was about to get the better of him with a pass round the outside on the final lap when Lee came off. Some felt he was impeded by a Stonehewer wobble but it was hard to tell. More worryingly, Lee required medical attention as a result although was obviously fit to carry on.
He certainly bounced back in style and got revenge in heat 6 with a paid win after both he and Bandits partner Tai Woffinden got the better of Stonehewer on the opening bends and beat him by a considerable distance.
The track looked as if it had some frost on it and was blamed for catching Lee out in heat 8 when he fell on the second bend and was excluded after trying the wide line.
In his final outing in heat 10, Lee again came to grief due to his never say die attitude, trying hard to take advantage of a misunderstanding between the Berwick pairing of Wright and Branney. In a last gasp attempt on the final bends he tried a wide sweep but all his effort was to end up with Lee hitting the deck.
Berwick lost out on the Young Shield to Workington by 7 points over the two legs but Lee's efforts were appreciated by the Berwick faithful
