Oyvind S Berg
(Posted 14/01/08)
Tigers fans will be sad to learn of the death of former rider Oyvind S Berg at the relatively young age of only 64.
Norwegian Oyvind joined the Tigers in 1967, the final year at White City a track that Oyvind had shown a great liking for when previously with the Monarchs. He finished that season as second top Tigers scorer with an average of 8.15 in a year that for most of the other Tigers was a season to forget.
Oyvind remained with the Tigers for the next two years with the team moving to Hampden Park, even riding as part of a 'Scotland' team who lost to England before being one of the top scorers in a Norway side who lost to the Scots. Unfortunately he finished the first season at Hampden on the injured list.
His third season as a Tiger saw him slot in as third heat leader but after a solid season as one of the Tigers more reliable riders, Oyvind moved on to Oxford.
Oyvind was a popular guest at the 60th Anniversary Meeting held at Ashfield in 2006 and he is remembered fondly by those fortunate enough to see him ride for his wide sweeps round the boards at Hampden.
There is a tribute to Oyvind on the Monarchs website which is well worth a read.
RIP Oyvind
