Josh and Mitchell Make U21 Final

Both Josh Grajczonek and Mitchell Davey made the final of the Queensland U21 title at Pioneer Park yesterday but this time it was to be King's Lynn youngster Darcy Ward who was to win the title on his home track.

Mitchell looked to have missed his opportunity early on in the meeting when plagued with chain and engine problems but stuck to the task and just managed to claim his place in the final ahead of Steven Reid.

It was King's Lynn's Kozza Smith who was, perhaps surprisingly, the only rider unbeaten in the heats, Josh getting second choice of the gate in the final thanks to finishing ahead of Darcy Ward in the heat they met. Mitchell also claimed a victory over Ward in the heat stages with some excellent defensive riding to hold Ward off for all four laps after beating him out of the gate.

The final itself was effectively two races in one, Josh and Ward battling out front with Smith and Davey doing battle for third place. Josh had made the gate but the two swapped places numerous times over the four laps with Ward just getting the nod at the chequered flag. Mitchell meantime briefly held third place ahead of Smith but Smith got by him on the opening lap and although trying hard Mitchell was unable to hit back. Given his early engine problems however it was a massive achievement that he even reached the final.
