Tigers Thrashed at Brough
(Posted 31/08/09)

An injury ravaged Glasgow side went down to their fifth defeat in a row in a rain curtailed meeting at Newcastle yesterday afternoon to fall eight points behind Stoke, the team they were aiming for in the battle for the final Young Shield place.

The recently much maligned Newcastle track looked okay as riders came to tapes for the opening heat although the referee may have had problems with the tapes as they seemed to be held for a long time, resulting in a re-run for the opening heat. When it got underway, the result was from the gate but Kenni Larsen won by a considerable distance in a very fast time. The Glasgow pairing filled the minor placing's after Parker shut the door on an attempt to get through by Sneddon at the end of lap 2.

Heat 2 also required a re run with Mitchell Davey being warned for rolling. In the re run, Mitchell easily won a processional heat from the gate with Robert McNeil left off the pace a little at the back after getting caught out on bend 4 of the opening lap.

Mitchell was back out again in heat 3 but retired with bike problems on the opening bend leaving Lawson the sole Tiger. Bach had outgated William and King was on his tail and tried to challenge outside on the opening bends and final bends of lap 2 but William held. On the third lap however King was successful, finally swooping outside to claim second place. William chased hard all the way to the finish but was unable to hit back.

Jason Lyons got the better of fellow countryman Mark Lemon on the opening bends of heat 4 which was to be another relatively spread shared heat with no passing.

Heat 5 saw Jason King win comfortably but all eyes were on the battle for second place. Josh Grajczonek had got the better of Rene Bach out of the gate but Bach was all over the back of him for all four laps. he came very close on lap three to squeezing by but Josh managed to hold although he had no answer to Bach's drive off the final bend which saw him beat Josh on the run in to the line.

Lyons fast gating gave him the win in heat 6, another processional heat rom the gate, before Newcastle hit the Tigers for a 5-1 in heat 7. Lemon had made the gate followed by Lawson but William looked surprisingly jaded especially when fellow Scot Adam McKinna went past him pretty easily after riding the wide line coming out of bend 2 on the second lap.

Mitchell Davey came in to partner Josh Grajczonek in heat 8, a heat which saw some pretty tough riding between Grajczonek and Sneddon. Josh held his determination and came out on top with Sneddon then sliding off but sportingly quickly remounting to continue racing. Trent Leverington had kept well clear of the shenanigans and comfortably won the shared heat.

Glasgow took the expected move of bringing fast gating guest Jason Lyons out on the TR in heat 9 but it seems almost sods law for Glasgow just now that as soon as you put a black and white helmet colour on you miss the gate! In fairness the Newcastle duo of King and Bach were lightening quick out of the gate but as always Lyons never gave up and tried everything to find a way back. It was not to be however and a desperate last attempt on the penultimate bend to pass on the inside saw Lyons come to grief and hit the deck.

Ironically, as the track had to be watered in previous track grades to minimise dust, rain now started to fall. Glasgow already had a defeated look about them as they were easily beaten from the tapes in heat 10 with Larsen and Sneddon comfortably adding to Newcastle's 5-1 count.

The last throw of the dice came in heat 11 with Josh Grajczonek out as the final TR. Mark Lemon made the gate, Josh worked hard for all four laps but was unable to mount a serious challenge. At the back, McKinna had outgated a clearly unfit Parker but Shane managed to find enough strength to pass for third place down the back straight of the final lap to give Glasgow their only heat points advantage of the afternoon.

Normal service was resumed for the home side in heat 12 with Leverington and King recording a 5-1 from the gate.

Despite the worrying weather, there was a considerable interval after heat 12 of around 25 minutes during which time the weather got as bleak as Glasgow's Young Shield hopes. As the riders came to tapes finally for heat 13 the rain started and it was probably a contributory factor in Jason Lyons sliding off on bend 3 of the opening lap. The race was called to a halt, the rain became extremely heavy and the inevitable decision to call the meeting to a halt followed quite quickly. It was the sensible decision for safety and obviously had no bearing on the outcome of the meeting.

Newcastle were once again worthy winners with Tigers season now heading quickly towards a premature end.
